Golden Age at Breda's Museum.
The international travelling exhibition Golden Age: Highlights of Dutch Graphic Design (1890–1990) is spending the summer in Breda as part of the Graphic Design Festival Breda. Its 180 classic posters will be on view at Breda's Museum through August._
The exhibition showcases highlights of 20th-century Dutch graphic design. These represent the peaks of the Art Nouveau, De Stijl, expressionist, Dutch constructivist and postwar rationalist movements. Visitors can drift back in time as they view posters by designers like Jan Toorop, Theo van Doesburg, Bart van der Leck, Piet Zwart, Paul Schuitema, Willem Sandberg, Dick Elffers, Jan Bons, Pieter Brattinga, Jan van Toorn and Wim Crouwel. Individually and collectively, their designs represent a unique, surprisingly coherent cultural tradition. Thanks to its originality and subtle complexity, much of this work continues to inspire graphic designers today._
Golden Age was previously on view in Madrid, during that city’s Dutch Design Month, and in Bucharest, Sofia and Budapest. The exhibition will continue to tour major European cities until September 2009. In each location, it will be accompanied by an extensive programme of workshops, lectures and tours. These adjunct activities are aimed mainly at graphic-design students and meant to generate cross-cultural exchange. After Breda, the posters will move on to Istanbul, Ljubljana and Warsaw.
