Alice Rawsthorn of the
International Herald Tribune
assessed the state of contemporary design in a talk before the
Rotterdam Design Prize 2009 ceremony on 29 November. Rawsthorn and designers Clemens Weisshaar of Germany and Sylvain Willenz of Belgium also discussed new opportunities in the design world in an on-stage interview with the design critic Gert Staal. (

The panelists debated the progressiveness and innovativeness of Dutch design and discussed its position vis-à-vis design in other countries. They also considered ways design might move beyond nationalist rhetoric.
The Next Promise of Design took place at Rotterdam's
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen directly before Rawsthorn presented the Rotterdam Design Prize to Studio Joost Grootens.
