Global interest in ideas related to sustainability is high, but repairing remains a neglected creative, cultural and economic force. Platform21 hopes to change that with Platform21 = Repairing , a multifaceted programme devoted to revaluing the act of mending that runs through Sunday 30 August.

Platform21's opening salvo, the Repair Manifesto, has already received international media attention and sparked a discussion about repairing in the design community. Visitors are urged to bring damaged items to the exhibition, where new interactive works could offer them a new lease on life. Nienke Sybrandy and Eva Heisterkamp’s repair station, for instance, teaches people to darn socks. The Repairing programme also includes lectures and workshops. And Platform21 and Bright magazine are calling for entries to the Most Remarkable Repair contest until Friday 14 August.

Platform21’s artistic director, Joanna van der Zanden, will speak about repairing at Premsela’s Milan design week forum on 22 April.

Participants in Platform21 = Repairing are Jan Vormann, Cynthia Hathaway, Yuri Suzuki, Rachel Griffin, Satyendra Pakhalé, Guy Keulemans and Martijn Dijkhuizen, Nienke Sybrandy and Eva Heisterkamp, Ernesto Oraza, the Lloyd Hotel, Daan van den Berg, Nina Katchadourian, 5.5 Designers, the TXT department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Helmut Smits, Krijn Giezen, buro buurvrouw, Prins Claus Fonds and Heleen Klopper.
