On 22 October, the new issue of
Morf
came to life at the first Morf Academy, which took place during
Dutch Design Week. Graphic designer and illustrator Parra talked about his position as a designer with a student audience at Eindhoven’s
Van Abbemuseum. Timo de Rijk, the magazine’s editor, hosted the discussion.
Social, participatory and sustainable design are hot topics nowadays. More and more, designers must decide what role they’ll play – creator, theorist, world improver, commercial professional? This choice of position is the central theme of
Morf
11.
The issue includes an interview with Parra; pieces about designers such as Rem Koolhaas, John Körmeling and Tom Ford; a new essay contest; and a reader survey.
The discussion at Morf Academy also touched on works created by four artist-designer groups for the Van Abbemuseum’s Dutch Design Week project
Take on me (take me on)
. Acclair, Metahaven, Conditional Design and Orgacom work in the building during the week, creating projects that address the issue of how people create society. The exhibition is on show till 9 November.
This was the first event centred around a
Morf
issue; more are planned for the future.
Morf
aims to spur its design-student readers to think about the design profession through a mix of opinion and essays from the Netherlands and abroad. These include original articles as well as new and classic reprints. It appears twice a year and is published in Dutch.
Morf
is a Premsela publication distributed free to all design students in Dutch higher education. Non-students can order it through
Nijhof & Lee. Premsela also offers annual subscriptions (two issues) for €17.50 in the Netherlands. For more information contact
