Aspiring designers aged 12 and up can style their own T-shirts under professional guidance during the Graphic Design Festival Breda. Mieke Driessen, Hanazuki and ZLDA will lead the workshops in Dutch on Saturdays 24 May, 31 May and 7 June respectively. Run by Spacesoup in conjunction with the T-shirt exhibition SweatShop, the workshops will take place in a temporary sewing studio at artists’ centre KOP. A design contest will accompany the workshops, with an exciting finale set for 11 June.

SweatShop, which features shirts styled by dozens of designers, runs 23 May through 29 June as part of the Graphic Design Festival Breda. Shirts in the exhibition are the work of dozens of designers, including Sagmeister, Inc., Lastplak, Enchilada, Mediamatic, Edhv and Erosie. Many of those on show will be for sale.

To reserve a workshop place, email publiciteit@stichtingkop.nl with your name, age and phone number and the date you wish to attend.

The Spacesoup SweatShops are a project of Spacesoup made possible by Premsela, KOP and the Graphic Design Festival Breda.

Spacesoup, the online architecture-and-design lesson programme for secondary schools, has a new recipe. Alongside rewritten lessons for HAVO and VWO pupils, Spacesoup includes a new series for VMBO pupils, Culture Clash. This month and next, teachers can attend Spacesoup Specials – mini-seminars on using the new programme in class. They’ll also learn about local architecture and design at the Specials and get a chance to produce designs of their own.

Specials will take place this month in Leeuwarden, The Hague, Emmen and Heerlen. Others have already been held in Arnhem, Alkmaar, Enschede, Middelburg and Haarlem. Recent Specials have featured excursions such as a tour of the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem and an architect-led walk past interesting buildings in Alkmaar. Enschede’s Special focused on the reconstructed Roombeek district, destroyed in the 2000 fireworks-depot explosion.

Spacesoup challenges pupils to think about architecture and design in the context of their immediate surroundings and gives them a chance to get hands-on experience. Each student decides on a design project, takes field trips for inspiration, and talks to professionals to get oriented. Finally, he or she creates a design and presents it to the class. The new VMBO Culture Clash lessons add a focus on multiculturalism and the two-way exchange between Dutch and foreign architecture and design.

The site introduces each assignment with a short online film or text. Other resources include an image bank, links and a search engine.

Spacesoup Specials are made possible in part by Bank Nederlandse Gemeenten.
