Five young Dutch designers will get to show their work during New York Design Week at the second international Streetlab Show Off. Fashion designers Elisa Marchesini, Antoine Peters and So Sally; photographer Dennis Duijnhouwer; and graphic designer Lennard Schuurmans will show their work with five fellow creators from New York.

Fashion shows, music and performances will be part of the exhibition, held on 17 and 18 May at the Milk Gallery in Manhattan’s fashionable Meatpacking District. Dutch DJ Mr Wix will be among those spinning sounds during the weekend.

Streetlab New York is a street-fashion exchange project whose goal is to provide an overview of differences and similarities between urban style in New York and Amsterdam. The event is made possible by the Mondriaan Foundation, the Netherland-America Foundation, the Dutch Consulate General in New York, and the City of Amsterdam.

Streetlab New York is part of the run-up to a series of cultural events in 2009 that will be held to mark 400 years of relations between Amsterdam and New York.

Streetlab is a platform for young creators of street art and fashion. Up-and-coming designers and artists have been showing their work since 2005 at its performances, shows and exhibitions. These take place at venues like Amsterdam’s 11 and Imagine IC and during event like the Wereld van Witte de With festival in Rotterdam and Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. In summer 2007, the four-day Streetlab festival at Amsterdam’s Westergasfabriek drew more than 13,000 visitors.

Streetlab is an initiative of Premsela and Cultuurfabriek.
