Gijs Bakker

Premsela, Dutch Platform for Design and Fashion, and the Netherlands Embassy in Tokyo organized a Pioneers of Industrial Culture event with Gijs Bakker on 1 November 2010.

Premsela's Tim Vermeulen interviewed the designer and former Droog Design director Gijs Bakker about the importance of raising cultural awareness and the role of design education in establishing an industrial culture. He payed special attention to Bakker’s ongoing career as a design educator, which began nearly 40 years ago in Arnhem and continues today (Bakker heads the master’s programme of the renowned Design Academy Eindhoven) and his ongoing efforts to explore a worldwide cultural design practice.

Gijs Bakker shared highlights of his career so far as a designer, teacher and project initiator who sees culture as an important part of industrial design. The interview took place at LLOVE, the temporary hotel-cum-exhibition, during Tokyo Designers Week. The interview is available as an iTunes podcast.
