Michele De Lucchi

Michele De Lucchi is a designer and architect who's escaped choosing between economic and creative concerns. His firm, based in Milan and Rome, works for numerous corporate clients. Meanwhile, his personal studio, Produzione Privata, turns out traditionally crafted furniture and accessories born of experiment. In June 2010 De Lucchi spoke with design critic Gert Staal in Amsterdam before a small invited audience. The designer discussed his ideas, products and way of working. A podcast of his conversation with Gert Staal in Amsterdam is available free at iTunes.

In 1986, De Lucchi designed the now-classic Tolomeo lamp for Artemide. Today his firm, aMDL, employs more than 40 staff, producing buildings, interiors and industrial products for clients including Olivetti, Artemide, Philips, Deutsche Bank and the Groninger Museum.

Through Produzione Privata, De Lucchi conducts research into architecture, design, technology and craft and experiments with ideas and forms. The resulting lamps, furniture and home accessories are produced in traditional Italian craft workshops and distributed around the world.

Premsela and Galerie Binnen staged the exhibition Pioneers of Industrial Culture: Michele De Lucchi/Produzione Privata from 11 through 21 June 2010 at the Museum Van Loon.

The exhibition and interview are part of Premsela’s Pioneers of Industrial Culture events series. The series focuses on the relationship between mass production and craft and how designers balance the two.
