After a successful first edition, the My first Design Collection course has started again this September in Amsterdam, Arnhem and Rotterdam. My first Design Collection 2012/2013 features visites to Centraal Museum, Gallerie Marzee, Artbrokersdesign and Pastoe. Speakers are Diana Krabbendam, Rob Driessen and Wieki Somers. More information on the three new course programmes can be found on the website My first Design Collection.
“We want to make citizens more aware of Dutch design history and give them a sense of responsibility for the Netherlands' design heritage,” says Premsela director Els van der Plas, “from Hella Jongerius’s vase for Ikea to Copier’s Leerdam wineglass and Joris Laarman’s Bone Chair.”

What they said last time
Suzanne Oxenaar, creative director of Amsterdam’s Lloyd Hotel and Cultural Embassy and new Hotel Exchange, spoke to 2011/2012 course participants about her passion for design. “People choose particular designs out of love,” she says. “I wanted to share that love with the students of My first Design Collection.” In Eigen Huis & Interieur magazine, Hermelijn van der Meijden wrote, “Doors that remain closed to others will open for MfDC pupils.” And one student said, “MfDC is an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge. I've never come across an initiative like this before."
How to take part
My first Design Collection is a course for people aged 30 to 50 with an interest in design and a Dutch or dual cultural background who are beginning or intend to begin building a design collection, whether on a limited or generous budget. Twenty students in each city will get to know the design world from the inside in a personal way. Online registration is open through Sunday 19 August.
The course, offered by Premsela with Eigen Huis & Interieur, costs €550 (€490 for subscribers to the magazine) excluding optional visits and lunch. Meetings, including a few out-of-town trips, will take place on 12 Saturdays from September 2012 until April 2013. My first Design Collection is a successor to the popular My first Art Collection.
