My first Design Collection

My first Design Collection began on 10 September 2011 with a discussion of two questions that would recur throughout the course: What is design? And what does it mean to collect and to call yourself a collector? The 20 participants on the Dutch-language weekend course – a successor to the popular My first Art Collection – reflected together at the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam.

In 12 meetings, which continue through 17 March, students are learning about the history of design, how to appreciate and assess objects, and the financial and practical aspects of building a collection. Experts teach them about the theoretical and practical sides of collecting design objects. Professionals also accompany them as they visit design fairs, academies and galleries and meet seasoned collectors.

My first Design Collection is a course for people aged 30 to 50 with an interest in design and a Dutch or dual cultural background who are beginning or intend to begin building a design collection, whether on a limited or generous budget. The 2011–2012 course was offered exclusively to readers of Eigen Huis & Interieur and cost €450.
