Thomas Widdershoven

In the series Pioneers of Industrial Culture, Premsela explores the role designers play in shaping contemporary culture. In the latest instalment Friday 18 February, curator and critic Aaron Betsky talked with Thomas Widdershoven of Thonik in Milan. The interview took place at the Triennale Design Museum in conjunction with the exhibition Graphic Design Worlds, and is organised in cooperation with the Triennale Design Museum and the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Milan.
Widdershoven, a graphic designer, started the office with Nikki Gonnissen in 1993. Thonik's work has left a clear mark on today’s graphic design both in the Netherlands and abroad. As forerunners of the New Sobriety movement, they have been prominent in the graphic design of the international cultural scene. Widdershoven and Gonnissen are firm believers that graphic design should act where it can in the public domain and participate in public debate. Their work spans graphic identities and communication for countless cultural institutions such as the Marta Herford Museum in Germany and the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale, but also a political party and a newspaper.
