Design's past can tell us a lot about its present. But it has more to say than that. As part of cultural history, design provides a record of the influences that have shaped us. And it therefore sheds light on how our cultural identity has developed.

Collecting course

My first Design Collection, Premsela’s course for Eigen Huis & Interieur readers wishing to start acquiring design, began in September. Participants will visit fairs, academies and galleries and learn about design history, assessing objects, and financial and practical aspects of collecting.

Willehad Eilers won the Munt met een Missie (“Money with a Mission”) competition to design a coin for the WWF’s 50th anniversary. Premsela will host three lectures on coin design and typography in conjunction with the Centraal Museum Utrecht’s exhibition of the 12 entries.

In a 2012 Premsela symposium in Enkhuizen, we’ll examine design processes past and present and talk about how we can influence the future of industry. Me Craft/You Industry takes place in conjunction with the exhibition Industrious| Artefacts: The Evolution of Crafts.

Designgeschiedenis Nederland promotes research and interest in Dutch design history. Alongside the website Designhistory.nl, the foundation now runs a LinkedIn group for discussion of current topics.
