Can anyone be a designer? The question is more relevant than ever. Today, more than half of Dutch people do something related to design or fashion in their free time. Meanwhile, a substantial number of Dutch designers has no formal training.
With the line between professionals and amateurs blurring, design is increasingly taking on the open character of photography or cooking. Design and fashion are becoming cultural fields with numerous physical and digital meeting places where people share knowledge and experience.
This openness offers great opportunities. When users contribute to the design of new products, those products are more effective. When young people design their own clothes, they discover their talent. And when consumers are involved in making goods, they learn about the meaning of value and the importance of goods that last.
With the People's Republic of Design programme, Premsela seeks to stimulate the development of design and fashion into open cultural fields.
