Rietveld's Chair

Rietveld’s Chair, copublished with NAi Publishers, appeared as the first instalment in the Design Stories series. In the book and accompanying documentary film, the art historian Marijke Kuper investigates how a modernist classic came into being and was used and viewed in its day.
The designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld’s 1923 red-and-blue chair stands as an enduring symbol of the De Stijl movement and was included in the official Dutch cultural canon in 2006. It is part of major museum collections around the world. But the chair's full story has not been told until now. In Rietveld's Chair, we learn where it was found in its day, who sat on it, and what Dutch and foreign museums thought of it. Lex Reitsma directed the film and designed the book.
