Around 45,000 designers work in the Netherlands, and they contribute an annual €2.6 billion to the economy. These figures come from a 2004 study by Premsela and the TNO scientific research institute. The report makes clear that design isn’t just important in technological innovation. Designers also make a big contribution to renewing the ways we experience products and the meaning they have in our lives. In this area in particular, there is plenty of scope to strengthen interaction between the cultural and economic spheres.

Through commissioning research into the economic aspects of design, Premsela plays a key role in the development of the government’s creative-industry policy. Design is a key part of programmes addressing culture and the economy, such as the Creative Challenge Call. These programmes are creating more and more opportunities for exhibitions, promotion, trade missions, market research and matchmaking. Our 100% Design Tokyo 2006 project is a good example.
